Heavy or Hard to Reach
the “Wrecker”
The wrecker tow truck or “wheel-lift” tow truck as it’s more commonly referred to are extremely versatile and can be used for any type of vehicle. It’s also much easier to use when towing vehicles out of hard-to-reach places, due to the retractable boom. Regular flatbed tow trucks can’t necessarily lift or fit oversized loads. They can’t reach vehicles in tight parking areas, covered parking structures, or in tight parallel spots. But a Wrecker can.
Vehicle Recovery With A Wheel Lift Tow Truck
Wreckers have one other unique advantage. They generally come with a more powerful winch and longer winch cables. That means we use them in San Diego Towing Recoveries. If a car rolls down an embankment, it will be very hard to get the car back up a hill. With a wrecker onsite, with an extendable boom, a longer winch cable, and tons of pulling power, a wrecker can drag a car back up the embankment. The long winch cables and powerful winches will literally pull/drag a car back up a steep embankment.
Wrecker Service San Diego Towing Techniques
Operator skills are critical when using a wheel lift. The lifting capacity changes based how far a boom is extended. So does the turn radius of the truck and the vehicle it is towing. Using the winch may not have enough pulling power on it’s own, so a snatch block can be used to double it’s pulling power. Double snatch blocks can be used to 4x the pulling power, but you’ll need a winch line long enough to reach the vehicle.
There are other tools that are utilized by the operator of a wheel lift that most flatbed drivers don’t use. Tow dollies are used when pulling a 4×4 or all-wheel drive vehicle. Go-Jacks can be used to help move or maneuver vehicles out of hard to reach places. Make sure that your wrecker or wheel lift operator has the skills and abilities to utilize the wrecker and all it’s additional equipment.
All Roadside Towing provides extra training to all our wrecker operators. They have gone through extensive internal training as well as programs sanctioned by the California Highway Patrol (C.H.P.). They are well versed in all the tools required to perform recoveries. Without the extra training, you risk damage to yourself, your vehicle, or worse.

San Diego Wreckers Are More Versatile
These tow trucks are used in every scenario, including vehicle impounds, tight parking areas, over sized equipment and underground parking structures.
Wreckers ARE the most flexible tow vehicles. The techniques used to hook a car, load it up, and tow with a wrecker require more attention to detail and more skill. Driving a wrecker with a vehicle “on hook” is also more difficult, particularly with a heavy load which will cause a substantial change to the trucks center of gravity.
